Starting in 2007 my fascination with nature photography began. In the years since wildlife photography with a focus on birds has gone from a very passionate hobby of mine to become my career. I spend much of my free time in natural areas searching for birds and any other wildlife that comes along. I concentrate on using creative natural lighting and interesting compositions to capture unique images of common and rare wildlife. My favorite style is a more scenic photo that includes some of the habitat wildlife lives in. I also enjoy passing along the knowledge and experience that I have gathered over the years to other photographers who are eager to learn.

Finding the Right Habitat for Wildlife Photography

In this lesson I answer the question how do you go to the “right habitat”. It’s a term I mention often and some of my mentorship students have asked what I mean by that so here is my best answer.

👏👏👏👏
Big slow birds are easy, Try getting a sharp photo of a tree swift in flight.
Agreed, that’s part of the reason I chose these for the lesson as it’s probably an easier subject for those learning.
Beautifull species!🦆
What a pretty little bird! I recently sat on my back porch and watched a little goldfinch each dandelion seeds off the ones growing in my yard. It ate for about ten minutes! I loved watching it! It was so pretty!
That sounds like a wonderful time!
Nice
Do the birds fly off after the shot because of the flash?
Not in my experience. It's a bright sunny day so the flash is barely registered to them.
Thanks, really enjoy this type of video!
Thanks os much!
So Ray was you in bird detection mode? Thanks loved the video!
Yes, I think this was before the Z9 had specific bird eye tracking but it had animal eye which included bird tracking. That made the compositions much easier!
Hei man. I really enjoy and inspire from these shooting sessions. I said it a lot of times 😅but is true. I love the two shots on the branch.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate you watching and following along!
'Not target migrating species'..... that is my problem right now and I find it demoralizing when I know I am ignoring birds because it's not the one on my list...and I know I need to stop the 'birding' and get back to the photography. I got to spend time with Louisiana Waterthrush this past February in Cuba since we have none up here in Eastern Ontario. They are a wonderful species to photograph but I didn't get anything close to the quality of your images.
Yeah, that's a tough thing to let go of all those wonderful migratory birds but damn they are tough! Thanks for watching and for the kind words about my photos. I'm glad you got some time with the Louisiana Waterthrush, they are a fun bird!
i feel like the d810 was when (36mp) was when this became apparent , more obvious w 45 , having said if a more extreme crop is needed the tc will help a bit to keep final image high enough mp ( at least 12 -20 ish)
I love these videos. It's like being beside you as you get the images. You are a good teacher and know how to explain what is important and what is fun to hear.
Thanks so much, it's so great to hear you like them so much!
Oh my. How Beautiful
Thanks!
Beautiful 😍
Thanks!
Just got back from Moab. Such an awesome place. Town is a bit to busy for me. First night we stayed about 23 miles out of town not to many birds. Great landscape with full moon. Other 2 nights was off the river with lots of birds. Will go back and stay longer next time.
Oh nice, glad you enjoyed the area as well! We loved staying around there, we stayed just outside of town in some boon docking area which was really nice.
Stunning clip!😊
beautiful bird and video
Wow those are some difficult birds to photograph. Nice how you show the time and effort behind those lovely shots. Just got my Z8 and have been trying it out on small birds. AF seem to have a learning curve as I am migrating from d850
Thanks so much, it was a blast with them! Nice about the Z8, give it time and I'm guessing you will love it!
Was that a Savannah sparrow?
I'm pretty sure I figured out it was a Vesper Sparrow.
Ah, yes! I get those two confused
Why aperture priority instead of manual with auto ISO? Also, what species were the sparrows?
Pretty sure they were Vesper Sparrow and I shoot aperture priority with auto ISO so I can ignore the shutter speed. I set a minimum shutter speed of usually 1/500 and the camera doesn't go below that but will go higher. I find it far easier than dealing with shutter speed and exposure compensation when shooting auto ISO so I tend to do that. When I shoot manual exposure mode I turn off auto ISO almost all the time.
Magnificent Ray🎉
Thanks!
When I first saw this video I thought it was my wife
How absolutely beautiful 📸
Amazing encounter...
Thanks for watching!
So cute!
They are, I agree!
I could almost cry they are so beautiful. What miraculous birds. Saw one today for what I believe is the first time, down near the harbor by my home.
Thanks for watching, they sure are pretty to see!
Highly unlikely they would have attacked her. Buuut I guess you never know. Especially when you’re on your own.
One of my shots of a great blue heron won a gallery award during this same time period. As the sun came up the smoke turned the sky blood red. The pond where I was shooting picked up some of that red reflection and I caught the GBH standing on a log in the water preening. It made a good composition that the juror liked and I got an award. So, something good for me came out of all that smoke. Other than that it didn't help my COPD a bit.
Congrats, that's wonderful, those conditions sure can be amazing!
If your purpose is print some pictures could be, but if you use your photos only for digital support not really. But that is my personal position. Nice video!
What an unbelievable shot.
Thanks for watching and I agree!
Tim's work is terrific and this shot is a ripper. The mist adds so much atmosphere.
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed this one!
Awesome my favorite bird ❤
Thanks!
Ray great photo shoot on edits the second one which is my favorite the only thing I would have done is crop a few inches off the bottom the white water is a little to much does not add to the photo in the bottom. Great job with the motion it must have been a fun day I need to ask how many times were you saying on the golden eye (I wish you were a drake) I would have been muttering under in my mind wish you were a drake. Eric Hansen great job
Thanks for watching and for the feedback. I was just thrilled to find the goldeneye since I don't get to photograph them too often.
Nice video. Shame you didn't have a drop in ND. I feel like I should pick up a ND and polarizers constantly in my bag so I don't feel sorry for myself in moments like these. Especially when shooting shore birds or by the water. I get how you feel about mallards, lol. I think as wildlife photographers we should not dismiss common species. They are really great tools for learning techniques also while everyone thinks that they are common and seen everywhere its funny that it actually turns out that very few photographers actually photograph them. It's rare to see a good picture of common species like sparrows, mallards or even common mergansers.
I'm 100% with you on not dismissing common species but when you have Goldeneye and Mergansers in the same river it's hard to point the lens at Mallards. As for the ND filter, I have never used one but I wonder how much they would slow down AF for birds moving around like this. I've always assumed it would slow down the AF too much. The few times I've used an ND filter with landscapes it's made things tough for AF. Although that was with dSLRs not mirrorless.
The gels would help the light blend so it doesn't look so obvious.
Agreed the gels would help the light color blend in but that direct on-camera flash for birds/wildlife always has a look that doesn't particularly appeal to me. Getting it off camera would help out but then you are talking a lot of things to pay attention to when just the birds are enough usually!
Wich monopod you use and movng headball on it?
I'm currently using Monopod: ProMediaGear TR42MX Monopod Head: Wimberley MH-100
@@RayHennessy Thanks Ray. 🙂
Thanks so much for the cool review, I am very interested in being able to edit after my outdoor shoots, wherever I'm at - beach, forest, car, wherever. My question is, is it possible to connect to your mac virtual display if you don't have internet? Like, if I'm at a spot with no cell signal?
Sure is, it's a direct wireless connection to the laptop, no internet needed!
@@RayHennessy Thanks Ray, I would love to be able to sit in the middle of the redwoods and edit - non photographers reviewing the AVP have no idea how liberating this aspect is for us. I totally connected with your video when I saw it and was like "YES! He gets it!!" I bought one recently from someone that barely used it, so I can't wait to receive it. Would love to see an update from you since the AVP has been updated - it seems like the foveated rendering specifically has been improved when working on the laptop...
@@chrisschmauch I didn't even know they updated that haha. I just keep using it when culling and finalizing photos when in the field and it's great! Hope you love yours and get to use it out in the field, it's such an amazing thing!
Lovely photos!
You have to come to Chile, Ray!
One of many placed I'd love to visit!
Wow a video I can show my kids thanks beautiful birds
❤
😮Absolutely gorgeous 💛
What a beauty ✨
Absolutely gorgeous image!!
Loving this “Story of the Shot” series Ray! I find them very educational for practical application when out in the field! Thank you!!
Thanks so much, so glad you enjoy them!
I do live in a house, so often will photograph in the same areas. Your video was a good reminder about knowing your habitat and wildlife behaviors.
Fantastic 🎉
Also love to see the RAW and the edit, well done on the processing !
Awesome shot, and thanks for sharing the story ! 🎉
Thanks!
Ray, I just have to be honest. I didn't see either of these Warblers in our recent workshop. I think I could've worked with these subjects a little longer then the ones we saw... 😆Great video as always. Practical tips on AF for dslr users, well done
Hahaha, they would have been so much more cooperative for sure!! Thanks for watching!
